Online Audio Books

I have become a fan of audio books recently.  As my life has gotten more and more hectic, it seems that the time spent in my car is about the only time I have free to get any reading done.

Inspired by this post at Lifehack.org, I went looking for other online audio book sources.  Brian Armstrong, the author of the Lifehack article, recommends the site Audible.com for downloading audio books.

As a fan of old literature and history books, the site LibriVox.com is especially intriguing.  I have added a link to this site on my sidebar for future reference.  Their site publishes audio recordings of public domain books for free downloading.

Surely the audio quality of the volunteer recordings at LibriVox will rarely match the professional readings found in commercial audio books, but to be able to listen to some of the classics without shelling out major bucks for the commercial version is great.

  1. they won’t *always* match pro recordings, but they often will, listen for instance to:

  2. Thanks for the comment Hugh.

Last night I downloaded Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Notes from the Underground. This was a book I started many years ago, but never got around to finishing.

Unfortunately, that can be said for a number of books in my library.

The audio quality and the speaking ability of the narrators was better than I expected. In just one day, I have already listened to several of the chapters, and am quite impressed with the audio book.

I am looking forward to listening to additional books from LibriVox, and would like to help narrate additional books if I have time.
