American States GDP vs. Equivalent Country Map

A very though provoking map posted at Strange Maps.  The creators of this map have identified a country with a GDP similar to each of the US states.

Some of the rankings seem dubious, as New York should rank second or third, not seventh as shown on the map.

Ranking the states by per capita GDP would also be interesting, I wonder how each state would stack up against the rest of the world.

If this site’s description of how GDP is calculated is correct, it doesn’t sit well with me:

GDP = consumption + investment + government spending + (exports – imports)

Shouldn’t deficit spending be subtracted from the government spending item?  Or is this accounted for in the calculation of the government spending item but not shown in this simplified formula?  Couldn’t a country just spend themselves a higher GDP?
